Custom Jewelry Chest
Page 2
This custom “One of a Kind” Jewelry Chest is made from
Quilted Sapele, (Entandrophragma Cylindricum). When Sapele has this
grain structure it’s referred to as “Pommelle Sapele”,
pommelle from the French word meaning "Quilted" which graphically
describes the convoluted grain structure of this wonderful wood.
Sometimes this wood is also called “Marbled” Sapele. In any event, this
is the most wonderful grain pattern that I have ever seen and the first
I have ever had in my shop or in fact the first I have ever seen. I knew
about the wood and had seen photos of it and was very happy when my wood
broker found a small amount and helped me purchase it. There was enough
wood to make two Jewelry chest. The wood is also the hardest to work
with of any wood I have ever dealt with, the grain structure is so
twisted and irregular that machine planning is impossible and work to
smooth out consist of sanding (lots of sanding). The top is banded with
MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of
ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This
close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to
dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items,
inlays, and contemporary furniture. Ebony is so expensive; they sell it
by the pound. The “Dovetail Keys” in the corners are Ebony A unique

This custom “One of a
Kind” Jewelry Chest is made from
Paduak (Pterocarpus soyauxii) also
called Vermillion; this decorative hardwood originates in Africa and the
Andaman Islands, with one major variety native to Burma. This wood is
naturally red to orange in color and sometimes there will be dark
streaks running thru it. This Chest was build
from the same board so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and matches on
three corners. Paduak is easy to work with and is used for
furniture, flooring and architectural accents and “one of a kind” boxes
of all kinds. Who says there are no red trees! The top is made from
Brazilian Rosewood which has been
“book-matched”. The light colored wood in the center is sap wood.
Brazilian Rosewood is in the “rosewood” family
of which there are about 250 species, with Brazilian Rosewood
being one of the most valuable, just under Kingwood and Ebony.
Brazilian Rosewood (Dalbergia
Nigra) comes from Brazil.
At present, the export and import of wood is banned per CITES II treaty.
To export one requires permission from the Department of Fisheries. The
wood weighs 48 to 52 lbs./cb.ft, but has more color variation than East
Indian Rosewood. It is known for its interlaced grain pattern. It is
easily identified by its smell, which is very unique and sweet. This
wood has a wonderful tone wood and is at present extremely high priced.
It dries very well and is used for guitar fingerboards, backs and sides,
laminate tops, bridge blanks, turning squares and fine furniture.
This unique
"One-of-a-Kind" Jewelry Chest is signed and dated.
There is a
full lift-out tray with storage below, with adjustable dividers. This
Jewelry Chest has 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand
Rubbed" to give it the best finish possible.

This custom
“One of a Kind” Jewelry Chest is made Canary. This wood comes from
Brazil. This wood has streaks of Red, Yellow and Black running thru it.
Canary is a wonderful wood to work with and finishes very well. This
wood is getting harder and harder to find, most lumber is made into
veneer. This Chest was build so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and
matches on four corners, matching three is easy, but matching four takes
some woodworking skill. This is a beautiful wood and takes an excellent
finish. The top is banded with Cardinal wood, a wood from Mexico, is
naturally Red in color, and is very dense. Is much more dense that
Paduak. This wood is sometimes called “Bloodwood”. This wood has a sweet
smell when machining, and is a great wood to “turn” on the lathe. The
inlays in the ends are Ebony and American Holly. All my Jewelry Chest
get 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to
give them the best finish possible. There is plenty of room in this
Jewelry Chest. The top lift-out tray has one small tray inside it. Below
this tray, there are two more trays. Removable dividers make arranging
compartment easy to hold small to large pieces of jewelry. Bottom of
Chest and all trays are lined with real suede.

This custom “One of a Kind”
Jewelry Chest is made from Zebrawood, (Zebrano - Microberlinia
brazzavillensis) this coarse, heavy African hardwood is named for
its zebra-stripe appearance when quarter- sawn. Very attractive, but
difficult to work because of alternating hard and soft grain. Used for
furniture, veneer, game boards, small boxes and decorative items.
Zebrano has the most fantastic grain pattern of any wood that I work
with. Most people know and will identify this wood very quickly. It’s
easy to see why they call it “Zebra wood” once you see it. This Chest
was build so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and matches on four
corners, matching three is easy, but matching four takes some
woodworking skill. This is a beautiful wood and takes an excellent
finish. The top is banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica)
is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri
Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained heavy hardwood machines and
turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for
turned and carved items, wall paneling, inlays, and contemporary
furniture. This wood is so expensive, that they sell it by the pound.
