Custom Jewelry Chest Page 5 This custom “One of a Kind” Jewelry Chest is made from Zebrawood. Zebrawood, (Zebrano - Microberlinia brazzavillensis) this course, heavy African hardwood is named for its zebra-stripe appearance when quarter- sawn. Zebrawood is very attractive, but difficult to work because of alternating hard and soft grain. Used for furniture, veneer, game boards, small boxes and decorative items. Zebrano has the most fantastic grain pattern of any wood that I work with. Most people know and will identify this wood very quickly. This chest was build from the same board so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and matches on three corners. It’s easy to see why they call it “Zebra wood” once you see it. The top is made from Paduak (Pterocarpus soyauxii) also called Vermillion; this decorative hardwood originates in Africa and the Andaman Islands, with one major variety native to Burma. This wood is naturally red to orange in color and sometimes there will be dark streaks running thru it. The two inlays are American Holly. This unique "One-of-a-Kind" Jewelry Chest is signed and dated. There is a full lift-out tray with storage below, with adjustable dividers. This Jewelry Chest has 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give it the best finish possible. Item # ted_768 Size is approx. 7 x 10 x 4 inches. Cost $375.00 (Free Shipping)
This custom-made “One of a Kind” Jewelry Chest is made from quarter-sawn Bubinga, (Guibourtia demeusii) this strong, heavy West African hardwood is rose to red in color with dark streak running throughout it and often found in striped to mottled figure. Works well with sharp tools takes a great finish. Bubinga is often available in wide lumber, making it popular for furniture, paneling or cabinetry. Being quarter-sawn gives the nice straight grain that I like. This wood is naturally reddish in color and twice the density of Paduak. The wood is very durable and works quite well for cabinetry, furniture and boxes. This is one of the “difficult woods” to work with, you need very sharp tools and sanding has to be perfect or sanding marks will show. Not an easy wood to work with, but the end results are well worth it. The interior is lined with American White Oak. I choose this wood to get the contract I wanted between the two woods. The corners are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Ebony is so expensive; they sell it by the pound. A unique "One-of-a-Kind" Jewelry Chest signed and dated. Each Jewelry Chest gets 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" between coats to give them the best finish possible. There is plenty of room in this Jewelry Chest. There is the top lift-out tray and below this tray, there are two more trays. Removable dividers make arranging compartment easy to hold small to large pieces of jewelry. Bottom of Chest and all trays are lined with real suede. Size is approx. 8 x 10 x 5.5 inches. Item # ted_627 Cost $449.00 (Free Shipping!)This custom-made “One of a Kind” Jewelry Chest is made from “Quilted” Bubinga, (Guibourtia demeusii) this strong, heavy West African hardwood is rose to red in color with dark streak running throughout it and often found in striped to mottled figure. This Quilted Bubinga is the first that I have ever had in my shop and is also the first that I have ever seen. This is the most unusual and beautiful grain pattern that I have ever seen. My wood broker says it’s his first also; it’s just too bad that I don’t have very much. This is one of the “rarest” woods that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Bubinga is naturally reddish in color and twice the density of Paduak, also a red colored wood, but about the same density as Cardinal Wood, which is also red in color. These three woods are sometimes mistaken for each other. Bubinga is very durable and a excellent choice for custom cabinetry, high-end furniture and speciality boxes. This is one of the “difficult woods” to work with, you need very sharp tools and sanding has to be perfect or sanding marks will show.
