Custom Men's Valets
"One of a Kind"
Signed and Dated

Each Valet is custom built, one at a time by me. I spend a lot of time choosing just the right woods to complement each other. Most are Exotic woods and none are on any endangered list. I use only solid stock, there is no veneer in any of these boxes, unless specified. All of the woods are their natural color, I use no dyes or stains. Every thing I make gets a "Hand Rubbed Oil Finish". Usually five to eight coats. This is a blend of five oils that provides the best finish possible. The finish was developed for the marine environment. The base is polyurethane.

This is the largest Men’s Valet made out of Wormy Chestnut that I have ever made and has two full lift-out trays. Wormy Chestnut is my best selling wood because there are no more American Chestnut trees alive. The top forward and back edges are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Ebony is so expensive; they sell it by the pound. The American Chestnut was killed by a blight that was introduced into the United States in the 17th Century by some plants infected with the blight brought in from Japan. By the mid 1930's there were not many trees left. The only way to get any Wormy Chestnut timber is to find an old barn or some type building and salvage what you can. The going price of Wormy Chestnut is around $12.00 dollars a board foot, as is, nails and all. By the time I tear down a building, dress the lumber, my yield is about 40% usable wood. That is not counting all the saw blades and planner blades I lose due to hidden nails. The cost of Wormy Chestnut at this point is probably around $30.00 dollars a board foot as best as I can figure. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. All my boxes get 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on from generation to generation hopefully. Two full trays and bottom of chest give plenty of room for coins, keys, wallet and cell phone. Bottom of Valet and trays are lined with real Velvet.

Size is approx. 8 x 11.5 x 4.5 inches.    Item # ted_733    Cost $298.00 (free shipping)

This custom made “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from EAST INDIAN ROSEWOOD (Dalbergia latifolia) is in the “Rosewood” family, of which there are over 200 species and East Indian Rosewood being one of the most expensive. At present, the export and import of wood is banned per CITES II treaty. To export one requires permission from the Department of Fisheries. This wood can only be imported as finished goods, not raw lumber. The wood weighs 48 to 60 lbs./cu.ft. This heavy and strong, durable hardwood is grown from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia. Variable coloration and good stability make this a good choice for accent furniture and fixtures, turnery, musical instruments (Martin Guitar being a major user) and “one of a kind” boxes of all kinds. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. Each Valet gets 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. There is a lift out tray and both tray and bottom of Valet are covered with velvet. There is plenty of room for rings, coins, a watch and other small things. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generation to generation, I hope.

This custom “One of a kind” Valet is a rarity and is two of four made from MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica) which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. I was lucky enough to find enough to build four valets, each different in its own way. The banding varies from box to box so no two are alike. The ends are banding with Black Palm. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and accents on high-end furniture. The wood is so cost prohibitive that building a box using Ebony is not done very often. This wood is so expensive, (about 100 dollars a board foot) that they sell it by the pound. Working with Ebony is like working with coal. There is no grain pattern that can be seen and sanding and polishing is like working with stone. The interior is lined with American Maple, which is a great contrast to the Ebony. This is a very classy Valet. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generations to generations hopefully. There is a full lift out tray with plenty or room for coins, keys, wallet and cell phone. Bottom of Valet and tray are lined with real suede.
