Men's Valet Boxes Page 4 This custom made “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from Cocobolo (Dalbergia retusa) is in the “Rosewood” family, of which there are over 200 species and Cocobolo being one of the most expensive. Seem Cocobolo is recognized more often than most exotic woods. This wood is most “asked for” from box collectors. Colors range from almost black to bright reds and yellows to an orange tint, truly a rainbow of colors. A heavy, durable hardwood from Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Cocobolo is known for wide color variation and great stability. Works well, but its dust is a serious irritant to some people. Cocobolo is difficult to glue. Well know to violin “Bow” makers. This Chest was build so the grain "wraps" around the Chest and matches on all four corners, matching three is easy, but matching four takes some woodworking skill. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. Each Valet gets 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. There is a lift out tray and both tray and bottom of Valet are covered with velvet. There is plenty of room for rings, coins, a watch and other small things. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generation to generation, I hope. Size is approx. 8 x 10 x 3. Item# ted_688 Cost 245.00 (Free Shipping!) (Sorry, this item Sold)
This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made out of Wormy Chestnut and is my best selling wood because there are no more American Chestnut trees alive. The corners are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Ebony is so expensive; they sell it by the pound. The inlay in face of Valet is Cardinal wood. The American Chestnut was killed by a blight that was introduced into the United States in the 17th Century by some plants infected with the blight brought in from Japan. By the mid 1930's there were not many trees left. The only way to get any Wormy Chestnut timber is to find an old barn or some type building and salvage what you can. The going price of Wormy Chestnut is around $12.00 dollars a board foot, as is, nails and all. By the time I tear down a building, dress the lumber, my yield is about 40% usable wood. That is not counting all the saw blades and planner blades I lose due to hidden nails. The cost of Wormy Chestnut at this point is probably around $30.00 dollars a board foot as best as I can figure. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. All my boxes get 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on from generation to generation hopefully. There is a full lift out tray with plenty of room for coins, keys, wallet and cell phone. Bottom of Valet and tray are lined with real Velvet. Size is approx. 7.5 x 11 x 3.5 inches. Item # ted_721 Cost $243.00 (free shipping) This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from Quilted Sapele, (Entandrophragma Cylindricum). When Sapele has this grain structure it’s referred to as “Pommelle Sapele”, pommelle from the French word meaning "Quilted" which graphically describes the convoluted grain structure of this wonderful wood. Sometimes this wood is also called “Marbled” Sapele. In any event, this is the most wonderful grain pattern that I have ever seen and the first I have ever had in my shop or in fact the first I have ever seen. I knew about the wood and had seen photos of it and was very happy when my wood broker found a small amount and helped me purchase it. There was enough wood to make two Valets. The wood is also the hardest to work with of any wood I have ever dealt with, the grain structure is so twisted and irregular that machine planning is impossible and work to smooth out consist of sanding (lots of sanding). The front and back edges are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Item # ted_726 Cost $259.00 (Free Shipping) This custom “One of a kind” Valet is a rarity and is four of four made from MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica) which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. I was lucky enough to find enough to build four valets, each different in its own way. The banding varies from box to box so no two are alike. The ends are banding with Cardinal Wood. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and accents on high-end furniture. The wood is so cost prohibitive that building a box using Ebony is not done very often. This wood is so expensive, (about 100 dollars a board foot) that they sell it by the pound. Working with Ebony is like working with coal. There is no grain pattern that can be seen and sanding and polishing is like working with stone. The interior is lined with American Maple, which is a great contrast to the Ebony. This is a very classy Valet. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generations to generations hopefully. There is a full lift out tray with plenty or room for coins, keys, wallet and cell phone. Bottom of Valet and tray are lined with real suede. Size is approx. 7.5 x 11 x 3.5. Item # ted_678 Cost 359.00. (Free Shipping!) (Sorry, this item Sold)
