Men's Valet Boxes Page 6 This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from Quilted Sapele, (Entandrophragma Cylindricum). When Sapele has this grain structure it’s referred to as “Pommelle Sapele”, pommelle from the French word meaning "Quilted" which graphically describes the convoluted grain structure of this wonderful wood. Sometimes this wood is also called “Marbled” Sapele. In any event, this is the most wonderful grain pattern that I have ever seen and the first I have ever had in my shop or in fact the first I have ever seen. I knew about the wood and had seen photos of it and was very happy when my wood broker found a small amount and helped me purchase it. There was enough wood to make two Valets. The wood is also the hardest to work with of any wood I have ever dealt with, the grain structure is so twisted and irregular that machine planning is impossible and work to smooth out consist of sanding (lots of sanding). The ends are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Ebony is so expensive; they sell it by the pound. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. All my boxes get 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on from generation to generation hopefully. There is a full lift out tray with plenty of room for coins, keys, wallet and cell phone. Bottom of Valet and tray are lined with real Velvet. Size is approx. 8 x 11 x 3.5 inches. Item # ted_725 Cost $259.00 (Free Shipping) (Sorry, this item Sold)
This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from Birdseye Maple, this wood has the most pronounced “eyes” that I have seen in a long time. Birdseye Maple is getting very hard to find due to the fact that most logs go to the veneer mill and finding quality Birdseye lumber is getting harder and harder to find and is now one of the most expensive domestic wood there is. This is one of my favorite woods, but it’s very hard to work with, you need very sharp tools and sanding has to be perfect or sanding marks will shop. The end results are well worth it. The top forward and back edges are banded with MACASSAR EBONY (Diospyros celebica), which is one of a group of ebonies from the East Indies, ranging from Sri Lanka to Indonesia. This close- grained, heavy hardwood machines and turns well, but tends to dull tools and is difficult to glue. Used for turned and carved items, inlays, and contemporary furniture. Each Valet gets 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. There is a lift out tray and both tray and bottom of Valet are covered with velvet. There is plenty of room for rings, coins, a watch and other small things. This Valet will become a family heirloom to be passed on to generation to generation, I hope. Size is approx. 7.5 x 11.5 x 3.5 inches. Item # ted_644 Cost $215.00 (Free Shipping!)
This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made out of Wormy Chestnut and is my best selling wood because there are no more American Chestnut trees alive. The American Chestnut was killed by a blight that was introduced into the United States in the 17th Century by some plants infected with the blight brought in from Japan. By the mid 1930's there were not many trees left. The only way to get any Wormy Chestnut timber is to find an old barn or some type building and salvage what you can. The going price of Wormy Chestnut is around $12.00 dollars a board foot, as is, nails and all. By the time I tear down a building, dress the lumber, my yield is about 40% usable wood. That is not counting all the saw blades and planner blades I lose due to hidden nails. The cost of Wormy Chestnut at this point is probably around $30.00 dollars a board foot as best as I can figure. A unique "One-of-a-Kind Valet" signed and dated. All my boxes get 6 to 8 coats of polyurethane oil finish that is "Hand Rubbed" to give them the best finish possible. Bottom of Valet and tray are lined with real Velvet. Size is approx. 7.5 x 11 x 3.5 inches. Item # ted_722 Cost $245.00 (free shipping) This custom “One of a Kind” Men’s Valet is made from Canarywood, (Centrolobium spp, family: Leguminosae) from Panama to southern Brazil. Yellow to orange in color, typically variegated with light to dark red streaking. It has a medium to high luster. It can be some what variable in density; it is mostly a hard, heavy and strong wood. Works very easily with both hand and power tools and finishes very smoothly. This is an exceptional exotic wood from Africa. Uses: Boat building, turnery, decorative veneers, cooperage, furniture, cabinetry, and custom treasure boxes of all kinds. Canarywood is my favorite wood to work with, it’s easy to machine with all tools, finishing very smoothly but attention must be paid to sanding to get the smooth finish that shows up the beauty of this wood. The top is made from Tulipwood,(dalbergia variabilis) which is in the “Rosewood” family. There are over 200 types of trees in the “Rosewood” family. Tulipwood and Cocobolo are the two most sought after ones. This beautiful Brazilian hardwood is remarkable for its pink to Red and Yellow streaks running thru it and with some Black streaks. Tulipwood when machining has the sweetest aroma and is a pleasure to work with. Heavy and brittle, the tree is small and yields short and generally narrow lumber. Uses include inlays, game boards, small turnings and decorative items and high-end Jewelry Chest. The forward and back edges are banded with Cardinal wood. 7.5 x 10 x
3.5 inches. Item # ted_645 Cost $185.00 (Free Shipping!)
